Description:
The goal of this course is to provide you with a high-level overview of effective employer policies and practices that improve employment outcomes for individuals with disabilities. This course is designed to give you the knowledge and skills to help public- and private-sector employers attract and retain individuals with disabilities in the workforce and to make them feel welcome. You’ll focus on an employer’s disability inclusion considerations in the recruitment and hiring components of the employment process. You’ll also investigate how these considerations influence career development and retention. Advice is provided about building a disability-inclusive work climate, and how doing so can heighten the likelihood that individuals with hidden disabilities will be comfortable requesting accommodation. You’ll also analyze employer considerations in the provision of equitable access to compensation and benefits. You’ll examine all points in the employment process where you can guide employers on improving the accessibility and accommodation approach for individuals with disabilities. Identify ways to assist employers in using metrics to assess the efficacy of their efforts in each part of the employment process. The course concludes with a blueprint of how you can serve employers as a consultant and informational resource. The research serving as the basis for this course was funded by a grant from the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research, Administration for Community Living, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, awarded to Cornell University’s Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Employer Practices Related to Employment Outcomes for Individuals with Disabilities (grant no. 90RT5010). Research was conducted in close collaboration with numerous employer-representative associations and individual employer partners, looking at effective disability inclusion practices in recruitment and hiring, retention and advancement, accessibility and accommodation, compensation and benefits, disability inclusion, and the metrics to measure efficacy across these practices.
